NevTan Drive vs Microsoft 365

A Microsoft 365 alternative that opens your Office files without owning them.

Microsoft owns the formats the business world runs on. This page is not an argument that it does not — it is about what you actually need in order to work with those formats.

When Microsoft 365 is the better choice
  • Excel is load-bearing: pivot tables, Power Query, macros, or models other people's work depends on. Nothing else matches Excel, and this is the clearest case of all.
  • You rely on Word's heavier apparatus — tracked changes across many reviewers, styles, references, mail merge.
  • Your company already runs on Teams, Outlook, Entra ID and Intune, and files are only one piece of that.
  • You need desktop apps that work offline, with the same fidelity every time.
  • A document has to look byte-identical to what a Microsoft app produced, because a regulator or a client checks it.
When NevTan Drive is the better choice
  • Most of your team reads and lightly edits Office files rather than authoring them, and a full per-seat licence each is more than the job needs.
  • You want to edit, annotate and sign a PDF in the same place, rather than buying a PDF product alongside Office.
  • You want link controls and a per-file audit log the file's own owner can read, not a tenant-wide compliance console.
  • You want files and mailbox drawing on one storage number and one plan, instead of separate Exchange and OneDrive quotas.
  • You want people outside your organisation to open a document from a link without a Microsoft account.

Questions

NevTan Drive vs Microsoft 365, answered

The things people ask when they are weighing Microsoft 365 against NevTan Drive.

Can I edit a Word document online without Microsoft 365?

Yes. NevTan Drive's document editor opens a .docx file directly and saves it back as .docx, so a document that came out of Word goes back into Word. It is on every account, free ones included, and needs no Microsoft licence or account.

Is NevTan Drive a Word alternative?

For reading, editing and sending documents, yes — it works in the same .docx format rather than converting to one of its own. It is not a match for Word's heaviest features: tracked changes across many reviewers, mail merge, references and the deeper styling apparatus are Word's, and this page does not claim otherwise.

Is there an Excel alternative that opens .xlsx files?

NevTan Drive's spreadsheet editor opens and saves .xlsx with formulas and multiple sheets. If your spreadsheets are pivot tables, Power Query or macros, stay on Excel — that is the one place where nothing else is close, and moving a model like that is a bad trade.

Can I open and edit a PowerPoint presentation online?

Yes. The presentation editor opens .pptx, edits the slides and saves .pptx, so the deck stays a PowerPoint file the whole way through.

What does Microsoft 365 include that NevTan Drive does not?

The desktop Office apps, Outlook and Teams, Excel's advanced modelling tools, and the enterprise administration around them — Entra ID, Intune and Purview. NevTan Drive is a file workspace with editors in it, not a replacement for an entire corporate platform.

Does Microsoft 365 let me edit a PDF?

Not directly. Word can open a PDF, but what it does is convert it into a Word document — the layout reflows and what you save is a .docx. NevTan Drive edits the PDF itself: text, annotations, pages, form fields and signatures, and what you save is still a PDF.

Ready to try it on your own files?

Create a NevTan account and upload a folder. Nothing in Drive is behind a paywall.
